I’m happy to be running again my seminar + workshop on the stories of Joy Williams. Having had the great fortune to teach this course a few times in the past, I’m thrilled to be offering it again — this time with an updated and significantly altered syllabus.

I have read these stories more times than anyone could conceivably be asked to believe, and I always find something else to say about them — such is their renewing gift. Having read Joy so closely for the last fifteen years, I think I am well-placed to chart a course through the terrain of her fiction, and I am eager to find anyone who wishes to join me.

If you have an interest in the stories of Joy Williams and desire a space in which to learn from them and discuss them, while also generating your own material, this seminar is for you.

If you’ve never before read so much as a single story of Joy’s, this seminar is also for you, and just as much as it is for anyone else. I am thoroughly convinced that there is much of value to be lifted from these stories if one wishes to write stories oneself, and Joy’s stories are of course only my chosen entry points into larger craft concerns that I should think will pertain to all manner of prose writing projects.

In an attempt to A any Qs that might come about, some more information follows:

COST: I am trying something new this go-round and offering two different ways you can take this seminar: as participant, or as auditor.

Participants are those who wish to sign up for both portions of the seminar: that is to say, they wish to be part of the discussion surrounding the Joy stories as well as submit their own work to be workshopped by myself and the group. Participants will submit up to 30 pages of writing to be workshopped and will receive an in-depth editorial letter from me.

Auditors, then, are those who wish to attend the seminar and participate in discussion, but not submit their own work to be workshopped. Auditors are welcome — but not expected — to read and comment on stories submitted by participants.

The rates are below. If you are interested in taking the seminar but strapped for cash, reach out to me anyway, all right? — we’ll see if we can’t figure something out.

Participants: $400
Auditors: $150
